Date: Fri, 9 May 1997 15:33:36 -0400 From: "Marjorie Zelner, IGS" Subject: Comprehensive Seminar-Workshop A reminder that the 54th Annual Comprehensive Seminar-Workshop in General-Semantics will be held July 18-25, 1997 at Mills College, Oakland, CA Learning to use your intelligence more intelligently The current Comprehensive Seminar-Workshop represents the results of our many years of exploring, adapting, and developing more effective ways of helping individuals learn about general-semantics, and how they can use it to improve their lives. The course content, atmosphere, staff involvement, etc., offer a wide range of learning experiences. Students and staff live, work, and play together, which encourages dynamic, integrative learning in an atmosphere of full involvement. The program stresses maximum participation of each individual and the dynamics of group interaction in the learning process. This year we offer some new perspectives and methods for learning to use your intelligence more intelligently. You will have opportunities to explore this approach by asking such important questions as: How do I evaluate important issues in my life? How do I make decisions about them? How can I improve my evaluating? How can I increase my own and others' well-being? Participants Participants in IGS Comprehensive Seminar-Workshops have represented many interests, age groups and nationalities. The Comprehensive Seminar- Workshop serves as the principal training and practice course in general- semantics. It is appropriate for both beginners and for those who wish to reinforce, extend, and implement their foundation in the discipline. Program The seminar-workshop program integrates lecture-demonstrations with applications and training in verbal and non-verbal awareness. Lectures and demonstrations give an intensive and close-knit exposition of general-semantics formulations as developed by Korzybski and elaborated by others. The method of lecturing involves an interweaving of basic information with illustrative material and experience. Other learning activities are carried on in small and large group discussions, other group interactions, sessions dealing with non-verbal experience, demonstrations, videos, consultations, etc. These activities focus on helping people to internalize a general-semantics orientation as a guide in their daily lives. We encourage participants to come to the Comprehensive Seminar- Workshop with a particular issue, concern, goal, etc., on which they would like to work. Each day's experience can be related to this issue, with opportunity for consultation with the faculty. Informal gatherings and parties round out the experience. The Comprehensive Seminar-Workshop has been described as a hard-working vacation. While you develop your skills for living, you'll have fun in an environment where you will meet people who may become friends for life. Background Reading Introductory articles and a copy of Drive Yourself Sane! will be sent to you when all fees are paid. We suggest these materials as background reading which will enhance your learning. A lending library as well as a selection of books for sale will be available. General Schedule Daily sessions, 8:45am to noon; 2pm to 5:30; 7pm to 9, followed by social gatherings, videos, etc. Please note: The effect of the seminar is cumulative, and participants are expected to attend all sessions. The schedule is intensive: participants are advised to live on campus and not to plan on being involved with any other work. The seminar is designed to be an educational experience, and should not be considered a form of psychotherapy. The Comprehensive Seminar-Workshop serves as a prerequisite for some advanced studies seminars in general-semantics offered by the IGS. See page 9 for further information. Faculty: Milton Dawes, Bruce Kodish, Susan Presby Kodish, Stuart Mayper, Homer Moore, Robert Pula Costs Tuition: If paid in full prior to May 1: $700 If paid after May 1: $770 Comprehensive Seminar-Workshop tuition includes a one year IGS membership. NOTE: This membership does not qualify for the membership discount on fees for this year's Comprehensive Seminar- Workshop. Former Comprehensive Seminar-Workshop students may deduct 20% from tuition; or current (1997) members of the IGS may deduct 10%; not both. Room and Board: Room and three meals a day in Mills College dormitory, $375. Most rooms are singles. Additional nights, if available, will be $50 per night. "Science and Sanity" seminar July 26-30, 1997 Mills College, Oakland, CA A Science and Sanity (S&S) seminar will immediately follow the Comprehensive Seminar-Workshop. Prerequisites for participation include successful completion of a Comprehensive Seminar-Workshop and prior reading of Science and Sanity. Participants read selected portions of Science and Sanity, present and discuss what has been read, and demonstrate an understanding of general- semantics as a system. Since S&S is Korzybski's major work, this study gives participants an in-depth familiarity with general-semantics and increased facility in discussing the discipline. Enrollment is limited so that participants and teachers can engage in a stimulating dialogue about the material. This seminar is part of the IGS's Advanced Studies and Teacher Certification Program, which is designed for people interested in becoming leaders and teachers in the field of general-semantics, and thus developing their own and others' potential. For further information about this program, see page 9. Faculty: Stuart Mayper, Homer Moore, Robert Pula Costs Tuition: If paid in full prior to May 15: $450 If paid after May 15: $500 Room and Board: Room and three meals a day in Mills College dormitory, $275.
