San Diego Mensa SIGs, online
Our SIGs (special interest groups) add color, personality, & flair to the
group, and offer multiple points of contact with the San Diego community
at large. Many of these SIGs are open to the public, and are thus potential
outreach opportunities. Let's use them :-)
- Mensa - main list
- announcements & chat
- Mensa - traditional recurring events
- most of these have been around for years
- Evolutionary Biology
- This group is for those who are interested in Biology and its ancient history. All
existing living species evolved from earlier forms, so
placing Biology in its evolutionary context is enriching and
can furnish deep insights regarding Life on Earth. If you or
your kids like Dinosaurs, Prehistoric Mammals (e.g., Sabretooths
and Marsupial Lions), the evolution of Humans, etc., then
this SIG is for you.
- Games
- The San Diego Board Games Players group is for
anyone living in the San Diego, California area
who would like to get together on a Saturday evening
to play various board games. (associated with SDM Games Night)
- GeneSIG
- Genealogy Special Interest Group....open to any Mensa member....
who is interested in tracing his/her ancestral roots
- Gifted Kids
- This is the Special Interest Group of San Diego Mensa for gifted kids and
their families. SIG participants don't have to be members of Mensa, but this
group is centered on benefiting our young members through various programs,
social & academic events, scholarships, resources, research, guidance &
advice for growing up gifted, emotional and other forms of support, etc.,
providing a forum where parents of gifted kids can connect and share
experiences & tips, and where various issues of gifted kids can be shared
in a friendly venue towards their resolution.
- Children & Teens Intellectual Games Days:
Children, teens & their families are invited monthly to meet
& play games designed to make use of & enhance intellectual ability.
This event is also intended as an opportunity to make new friends.

- Liberty
- This is a group of libertarians
in the San Diego area who are either members of or friends
of Mensa. While membership in the San Diego Libertarian
Party is not required, chances are very good that we'll be
hanging out with that group now and then, especially at
their monthly supper club meetings. Others who may find this
group of interest include: Objectivists, Classical Liberals,
Free Market Advocates, AnarchoCapitalists, etc.
- LifeExtension / Immortalism

Immortality. Topics include, but are not limited to: dietary

general field of Linguistics. Topics can range from the brass
tacks of spelling, syntax, grammar, phonetics, phonology,
morphology, alphabets ... to the perhaps more profound subjects
of etymology & the origin/evolution of languages, semantics,
pragmatics, semiotics, psycholinguistics, animal communication,
language acquisition, etc., up to the philosophy of language
and my favorite, general-semantics.
- Math Lovers
- This group is a fuzzy set of people who
live in or frequently visit the San Diego area, who are
members of or friends of Mensa, and who like & enjoy at
least a significant subset of the field of mathematics.
- NeuroScience
- This group is for those
who are interested in some or all aspects of Neuroscience.

of human brains, physiological correlates of intelligence &
consciousness, evolutionary psychology, smart drugs and
nootropics, neuro-cognitive training techniques, etc.
- Opera
- The San Diego Opera season lasts five months, one opera a month
from January through May (inclusive). OperaSIG accordingly meets
three times during each of these five months:
one Sunday late-morning, at a nearby bistro, for brunch, before
the matinee performance;
one Monday evening, in La Jolla, while that month's opera is still
in rehearsal, for the Preview Lecture; and
one Thursday late-afternoon, at the downtown Civic Center, while
that month's opera is still in rehearsal, for the Artists' Roundtable.

Nonlinear Dynamics, Connectionism, Information Theory, Fractals &
Self-similarity, Game Theory, Systems Analysis & Design, Complexity
Theory, Self Organization & Spontaneous Order, Adaptive Systems,
Cellular Automata, Strange Attractors, Emergence, and more.
- Wealth
- This group if for those who want to build
and enjoy their wealth. For some, this will mean getting
out of debt and becoming financially stable. For others,
it will mean achieving financial independence as soon as
possible. For others, it will mean amassing capital to use
in founding a new industry, or to strategically benefit
others to maximize the amount of good they can do in the
world, etc. This group is to be money-friendly, wealth-
positive, & unabashedly pro-capitalism, in the very best
sense of that word.
- Young M's - events, & light chat
- This is the main group currently for Generations X & Y
"to organize Mensa activities of primary interest to younger members.
....to introduce themselves to the group, describe their interests, and
brainstorm ideas for events."
- Young M's - uncensored, politically incorrect, free-for-all discussion & links
- This is the "anything goes" free-discussion companion list
for the San Diego Young Ms SIG. No topics are off-limits,
though politeness to each other is a must. Because of some
potential content that may get posted here, members of this
group will need to be 18 or older.
